Legend has it that whilst hunting by the confluence of the Neris and Vilnia Rivers, Gediminas, grand duke of Lithuania dreamt of an iron wolf atop a nearby hill, which howled as loud and strong as one hundred wolves. Asked to interpret the dream, the duke's shaman ventured that the wolf represented a castle, and that Gediminas was to found a city on that site. A likely story. But still, there is a castle on a hill, and a city below it. The city has a vibrant old town, a burgeoning new one, church spires aplenty, a venerable university and a every citizen it seems, owns a dog.
