The yellow and white bunting is out on the streets, and the Kingdom of Thailand's new monarch will be formally crowned just a few days after we leave Thailand (May 4 to 6).
Of course, King Maha Vajiralongkorn (Rama X) has been king since 13 October 2016, following the death of his father, the much loved Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX), though during this time he has been considered a regent, unable until consecrated by the coronation rites of anointment and purification to perform certain of the traditional Devarāja (God-King).
So very soon, resplendent in his military uniform, Rama X will be a very model of a modern Thai Monarch, able to sit legitimately under the traditional nine-tiered umbrella, and enact Royal Commands.
