At the foot of Cerro San Cristobal, is La Chascona, the Santiago home of renowned poet Pablo Neruda, where he lived with his muse Mathilde. The house was vandalized by right wing thugs after the 1973 coup d'etat. Now it stands once more restored and celebrates the life and vision of the poet.
Likewise, Salvador Allende's bronze bust takes pride of place in the centre of the city, gazing over the facade of La Moneda, once bombed by Pinochet's cowards in 1973, the palace is now restored to the people.
Somewhere in Santiago, Dictator Pinochet's remains now lie concealed in one of his former residences. There is no public commemoration of his life and disservice to Chile.
Justice may take time to come, but given patience, come it does. Horrific things were done. These crimes were acknowledged and repented by the perpetrators. Modern Chile is a better place than it may have been if the cycle of violence begun by Pinochet and his American sponsors had been continued by those who participated in the demise of his illegitimate regime.
